Math Club Party

After looking at the submissions today I can tell you no one has the correct answer yet.  SD and MC are very, very close!  Keep going and see how you do!  We will work on it again next Friday.
Ms. L.

The Math Club is having a party. Members of the club bring presents to give to the other members of the club. Every club member brings the same number of gifts to the party. If the presents are opened in 5 minute intervals starting at 1:00pm the last gift will be opened starting at 5:35pm.
  • How many club members are there?

Solution:

Many of you were fabulous about including your thinking.  Don't forget to show what you consider your proof for your solution.  Refer back to the 8th grade page for the writing requirement.

Your final answer should have been 8 people present and 56 gifts. If there were 2 club members each would bring one present and the second present would be opened starting at 1:05. If there were 3 club members each would bring a present for the others in the club meaning 2 presents. You can see a summary in the chart. In the true sense of holiday giving each club member gave a gift to every club member. Of course, they did not give a gift to themselves.

We found the answer by, dividing five into sixty, because, there are sixty minutes in an hour, which means 12 gifts were opened an hour. Then, we added sixty+ sixty+ sixty+ sixty+ thirty-five to get the amount of minutes. Then we divided by five, to find the number of gifts opened during that time period.

60/5=12
60+60+60+60+35= 275
275/5=55

55 is the amount of people attending the math party.

If presents are opened at five minute intervals, and there are 4 hours and 35 minutes to open them (1:00-5:35), then we need to know how many 5 minutes there are in an hour.
>> 60 / 5 = 12
So then we need to find how many there are in 4 hours and 35 minutes.
>> 12 * 4 = 48
>> 48 + 7(how many 5 minutes there are in 35) = 55
Assuming that each club member brought one gift each, so there are supposedly 55 club members at the party.

There are 55 people in the club. By 2:00 12 presents will have been opened. By 3:00 24 presents will have been opened. By 4:00 36 presents will have been opened. By 5:00 48 presents will have been opened By 5:35 the last 7 presents will have been opened there fore there are 55 people in the group.

Steps
First I do 5:35 – 1:00 = 4:35 to find the number of hours and minutes in between 1:00 and 5:35.
Then I divide 4:35 by 5.

Then I do 60 minutes divided by 5 minutes = 12 minutes to find the number of minutes for 1 hour.

I multiply 12 minutes by 4 = 48 minutes the 4 represents the 4 hours in 4:35.
35 minutes divided by 5 minutes = 7 minutes
48 minutes + 7 minutes = 55 minutes
The answer is 55 people.

There are 55 members in the math club party. Because there are 275 minutes in between 1:00pm and 5:35pm, and 275(total time) divided by 5(time it takes each member to open a present) equals 55.

There are 55 people in the math club party because there are 275 min. in 4 hours and 35 minutes, and then you divide it by 5 and it equals 55.

First we started off by doing 12 times 5, because that’s how many times 5 goes into 60. This is an hour long. Then we multiply 12 times 4 and that ends up being 48. Then we multiplied 5 times 7, which was 35. So then we added 48+12+7. Which then ends up being 67.

It says that each present was opened at 5 minute intervals. So each hour 12 presents were opened, keep adding that and you get your answer.

• There are 120 members at the party.

• To get my answer I subtract 5:35 to 1:00 first!!!
• So I got 4:35!!!
• With that I divided 4:35 to 5!
• So I got my answer 87 members!!

Steps to how I got my answer…..

In 5 minutes one present was opened
So if the presents are started opening at 1:00
If they stop opening presents at 5:35
Every hour 12 presents are opened.
In 5 minutes one present was opened
So if the presents are started opening at 1:00
If they stop opening presents at 5:35
Every hour 12 presents are opened.
If there is 4 hours 48 presents would have been opened.
Then there is still a 35 minute extra weight, with in the 35 minutes 7 presents would have been opened.
So 48 plus 7 is 55.

Every five minute a present is opened
They start opening gifts at 1:00 pm and then they stop opening by 5:35 pm.
Every hour 12 presents are opened.
If there was four hours of opening gifts that would be 48 gifts and then with the 35 minutes left that would be 7 gifts and then it would add up to 55 gifts.
My answer
There are 55 members

Work
35 divided by 5 would equal seven
5 x 12 = 60 and that’s how you get how many presents are opened in an hour.
