Thanksgiving Time

A large Thanksgiving banquet served between 500 and 600 people. The dinner rolls came in baker's dozens (packages of 13). After everyone had been served a roll there were a number of empty packages plus one open package with 10 rolls left. The pies for dessert had each been cut into ninths, and after everyone had been served a slice there were a number of empty pie tins plus one pie tin with 4 slices left. The tables in the banquet hall each had room for 15 guests. All but one of the tables were full. How many people were seated at that last table?

Be sure to completely explain your method and your answer.  Each step you used should  be explain.  Anyone who does not understand math should be able to follow your process and get the same answer.

Have fun and good luck,
Ms. L.

The Three Candy Corn Jars

In my favorite shopping mall downtown there is a specialty shop that's bound to please anybody's sweet tooth. It's a candy store called Candylandia. In this store you can find just about any kind of candy your tastebuds would savor.

One favorite and traditional candy is the candy corn. Candylandia sells candy corn in three different-sized jars: small, medium, and large. The owner, who loves fairy tales too, calls them the Baby Bean jar, the Mama Bean jar, and the Papa Bean jar, respectively.

Strange as it may seem, each jar of a given size always contains the same number of candy corn as any other jar of that size.

One day, Mrs. Goldie Lochs brought her 9-year-old set of triplets, who had a big craving for candy corn, into the store. Each child (Allen, Bradley, and Charles) bought two different jars of candy corns, but none of the combinations were the same. At home, the children decided to count the number of corns that they had purchased.

Allen announced, avidly, "I have 157 candy corns!"
Bradley boasted boldly, "But I have 47 more than you do, so there!"

Charles chimed in, calmly, "Well, I have 112 less than you two guys have together, but I'm not complaining."

Using this unusual collection of information, please tell me how many candy corns are placed in each jar. Be careful to properly identify any variables you use. State your equations and describe in words how you solved the problem. Then give your equations and work them out for us.

Good Luck,
Ms. L.

P.S. Happy Birthday Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

Solution:

What I noticed this week was many people did not read the problem carefully.  It stated that each child bought two (2) jars each.  You needed to give the size of the two jars and the total amount of candy.  You all gave me the total but not the size of the jars.  I also noticed many of you posted as partners.  If you do not see your posting please come and see me.
Ms. L.

Allen has 157 candy corns with the combination of a small jar and a
medium jar. A small jar contains 56 candy corns, and a medium jar
contains 101.

56 + 101 + 157

Brad has 204 candy corns with the combination of a small jar and a
large jar. A small jar contains 56 candy corns, and a large jar
contains 148.

56 + 148 = 204

Charles has 249 candy corns with the combination of a medium jar and
a large jar. A medium jar contains 101 candy corns, and a large jar
contains 148.

101 + 148 = 249

Math Club Party

After looking at the submissions today I can tell you no one has the correct answer yet.  SD and MC are very, very close!  Keep going and see how you do!  We will work on it again next Friday.
Ms. L.

The Math Club is having a party. Members of the club bring presents to give to the other members of the club. Every club member brings the same number of gifts to the party. If the presents are opened in 5 minute intervals starting at 1:00pm the last gift will be opened starting at 5:35pm.
  • How many club members are there?

Solution:

Many of you were fabulous about including your thinking.  Don't forget to show what you consider your proof for your solution.  Refer back to the 8th grade page for the writing requirement.

Your final answer should have been 8 people present and 56 gifts. If there were 2 club members each would bring one present and the second present would be opened starting at 1:05. If there were 3 club members each would bring a present for the others in the club meaning 2 presents. You can see a summary in the chart. In the true sense of holiday giving each club member gave a gift to every club member. Of course, they did not give a gift to themselves.
